Cameras & Time Slate

Time clapper 0:25 Set camera clocks automatically – with a QR code that each camera films briefly.

Action-cam clocks are often wrong, for example with an incorrect date, after a battery change or without time synchronisation. In this chapter you will learn how to correct the camera time manually or automatically with the time slate. You will also learn how to set the audio channels of your cameras and what applies to the Insta360 X5.

Correcting camera clocks manually

In the calendar you will find the Camera clocks section. It lists every imported camera folder of a day with the following details:

  • Camera time of the first recording
  • Offset from the real time
  • Day the folder is assigned to

To correct the time:

  1. In the calendar, open Camera clocks.
  2. For the folder you want, enter the real time of the first recording.
  3. Tap Apply.

The folder then moves to the correct day. Order, GPS data and comments are adjusted accordingly.

Use Reset to remove the correction again.

Tip: An example: on 12.10. the GO 3S shows a camera time of 16.07., 18:24:37. The real time was 12.10., 18:40:03. Enter this real time.

Time slate

The time slate saves you doing the maths. The tablet or phone shows a QR code with the exact time of the Pi. Each camera films this code for 2–3 seconds at the start. After import, the Pi finds the code in the video and corrects the camera clock itself.

The page runs in your device’s browser, but the time shown comes from the Pi. The code changes every 100 milliseconds.

Show slate

  1. Open Settings → Time slate.
  2. Select the camera:
    • an existing camera folder,
    • Franks Ace or
    • Other …
  3. Enter a note if needed.
  4. Tap Show slate.

The slate appears in full screen. You see:

  • a large QR code, black on white,
  • the time with tenths of a second, as local time and as UTC,
  • the selected camera and the slate ID,
  • the time quality: whether the Pi has synchronised its clock and how large the uncertainty is.

The screen stays on while the slate is running.

Caution: If the time quality is marked red, the Pi has not synchronised its clock. The correction is then only as accurate as the Pi’s clock.

Filming the slate

  1. Set the screen brightness to maximum.
  2. Start recording on the camera.
  3. Point the camera at the QR code for 2–3 seconds.
  4. Tap the screen. Tapping ends the slate.

After import

Import the memory card as usual. The Pi then searches all new camera folders for the slate in the background. This only happens when no other job is running.

To start the search manually:

  1. In the calendar, open Camera clocks.
  2. Tap Find slate.

The result appears under Camera clocks, for example: “Slate found: VID_… frame 123, offset +926.4 s ±0.04 s”. The folder moves to the correct day with the corrected time.

As evidence, the Pi saves a still of the detected frame in the camera folder. Distribution and cloud copy it as well.

Caution: If you set the time manually beforehand and the slate differs from it by more than 1 second, the Pi does not overwrite your value. Instead, Apply slate appears. Tap it to replace your value with the slate result.

Tip: The Pi searches for the slate in the first and last 10 seconds of each clip. So film the slate right after starting or shortly before ending a recording.

Camera audio channels

Some cameras record different things on the two audio channels. You decide how each camera’s audio is used in the day preview.

Open Settings → Day preview: camera audio channels. For each camera folder, choose:

  • Stereo
  • left to both
  • right to both

Defaults:

  • The Ace Pro 2 records the helmet microphone on the left and the sat nav on the right. It is detected automatically and preset to left to both. Low-frequency noise below 100 Hz is then removed from the speech, which is raised to an even volume, by at most +12 dB. Silent audio stays silent.
  • GO 3S and X5 are set to Stereo.

Tip: In the editor you can change the channel selection for individual sections using channel markers.

Insta360 X5

The X5’s 360° files contain two fisheye images, one per lens. SD Migrator reads them together with the camera’s associated small preview files:

  • Analysis and preview use the preview file.
  • The finished video is created from both lenses in full quality.

For the viewing direction in the panoramic image:

  • yaw 0 is the centre of the image; positive values turn to the right.
  • pitch with positive values looks upwards.
