Card labels & drives
Labels give your memory cards fixed names. This lets SD Migrator recognise your cards and store the files in the matching folders. To make sure no data ends up on the wrong drive, stricter rules apply to Staging and backup drives.
Staging and backup drives
A drive can only be used as a Staging or backup target if it has two identifiers:
- a unique hardware identifier (WWN or serial number) and
- a unique file system identifier.
Several partitions on the same drive may share the same hardware identifier. Their file system identifiers must, however, be different.
Caution: If two drives have the same identifier, SD Migrator blocks both as targets. You then cannot select them for Staging or backup.
Caution: If you reformat a drive, it receives a new file system identifier. Afterwards, deliberately select the drive as a target again.
Source cards and labels
You can also select source cards without a unique identifier. In this case, however, SD Migrator will not recognise the card automatically.
Label and volume name
A card’s label and its volume name are two different things:
- EDIT only changes the label.
- DEL only removes the label assignment. Files and the card’s volume name remain unchanged.
- If a card has no label, SD Migrator uses the volume name as the folder name.
Use a known label
If a card has no label, SD Migrator shows up to five known labels with the same volume name beneath it. This also applies to cards without a name that macOS or Windows display as “UNTITLED”, for example with Ace Pro 2 and DJI.
- Insert the card.
- Look for the dashed area with the suggested labels beneath the card.
- Tap the label you want. SD Migrator applies it to the card.
Cards without any identifier
Some cards provide neither a hardware nor a file system identifier, for example an Ace Pro 2 card in a card reader. For such cards, a label only applies while the card is inserted. SD Migrator then shows the notice “Label applies until removed”. The reason: otherwise the next card in the same reader could not be distinguished from the previous one.
After removal, the label remains available as a suggestion. You can apply it again to the next card with a single tap.
Tip: Give the card a volume name on a PC. SD Migrator will then recognise it permanently.
Card readers and USB SSDs
SD Migrator cannot reliably distinguish a card reader from a USB SSD. For this reason, all USB drives that are not set up as Staging also appear for selection as a source.
Caution: Before COPY or MOVE, always check that you have selected the correct source.
