Interface, Settings & Powering Off
This chapter shows you how the SD Migrator interface is organised and where to find help, drives and settings. You will also learn how to power off or restart the Pi safely.
Help and “About SD Migrator”
- Tap the ? at the bottom right. Help for the current page opens as a popup, for example for Back up cards, Distribute backups, Preview, Drives or Settings. The page itself stays as it is.
- Tap the ⓘ at the bottom right. “About SD Migrator” opens, showing the version, copyright, license, a link to the source code and the versions of the bundled Android app, Python and rclone.
Drives
The Drives page shows all connected storage devices with their identifier (UID/UUID), mount point and size. Here you can:
- mount storage devices,
- safely unmount storage devices,
- open the system backup,
- Create emergency SD.
Settings
The Settings page contains the following sections:
- Android app
- Wi-Fi hotspot
- Internet (Wi-Fi client)
- VPN (OpenVPN)
- HTTPS certificate
- Overheating protection
- Day preview: camera sound channels
- Timecode generator
- Time & NTP
- Time clapper
- Claude (daily preview)
- Cloud targets
- Development system (DEV)
The sections appear as tiles showing a title and the current state, for example ”● DEV on”.
- Tap a tile to open the section.
- Make your changes and save. The section stays open afterwards.
- Tap ← All settings to return to the overview.
If you switch to another page and come back later, you will see the overview again. If the Android app is missing on the tablet or out of date, the Android app section always appears above the tiles.
Tip: On Drives and Settings you only see metrics and progress while a job is running.
Layouts
The interface adapts to your device:
- Tablet landscape: On the left you see system values, connection, the light/dark switch (◐) and the menu. On the right you see source, Staging and a fixed column with large COPY and MOVE buttons – all without scrolling. The configuration buttons for the Staging targets (including Reset) appear after you tap Change.
- Tablet portrait and phone: COPY and MOVE remain available as a bar above the menu.
- Desktop: The header is at the top, the menu at the bottom.
- Editor (daily preview): A fixed workspace fills the whole window. The video is at the top left, the controls on the right, the timeline at the bottom. In portrait orientation the parts are stacked vertically.
The header also shows:
- a red DEV if the Pi is a development system,
- a 🔒 with the profile name when a VPN is connected. In tablet landscape mode this indicator appears as a separate line in the left sidebar.
Power off Pi
Always power off the Pi via the interface. This ensures all drives are disconnected properly.
- Tap the button with the power symbol (in the header or in the left sidebar).
- Confirm the shutdown.
- The Pi shuts down cleanly.
Caution: The button is locked while a job is running. Wait until the job has finished.
If the Pi is set up accordingly, it is then fully off and draws hardly any power from the power bank.
To switch the Pi on again:
- press the power button on the Pi, or
- briefly disconnect the power supply.
Restart
- Tap the button with the power symbol.
- Select Restart in the dialogue.
- After about a minute the Pi is reachable again. The hotspot, browser and Android app reconnect automatically.
Restarting is also only possible when no job is running.
DEV mode (second Pi)
If you run a second Pi alongside the one on the motorcycle, you can mark it as a development system. This stops the two devices from getting in each other’s way.
- Open Settings → Development system (DEV).
- Enable This Pi is a development system.
Afterwards:
- The hotspot runs on its own network. The Pi is reachable at
https://10.43.0.1instead ofhttps://10.42.0.1. - A red DEV appears at the top.
- The server certificate is reissued for the new address. You do not need to install a new certificate on the tablet.
- The Android app picks up the new address automatically.
- The emergency SD stays at
10.42.0.1.
Test options
In DEV mode, additional test options appear below the DEV switch:
- Connect VPN even without Pi hotspot: Disables the hotspot check for the VPN. This lets you test with the tablet on your home network.
Caution: The VPN may then cut the connection to your device. The Pi remains reachable via the hotspot.
As soon as you switch DEV off, the hotspot check applies again.
Tip: The Android app only checks the Wi-Fi while the hotspot address is entered as the address. If you enter the Pi’s home network address, this check is skipped.
